Merging of Speed & Kandinsky

I had been studying linear principles presented by Harold Speed in his book: The Practice & Science of Drawing  (1916) when I recalled ideas presented by Kandinsky  in his book Point & Line to Plane (1927)

I found it interesting that one man was relating these linear principles to representational art and the second was developing an art that just concerned it'self with the principles.

Green Moon

I wanted to work with simple shapes resulting from a free spontaneous subdividing of the visual space.

The image slowly evolved much like an interesting dream. It has elements of a mother and child attempting to bridge the seperating gap of birth.

The fourth sketch in a series that will eventually result in an oil painting. (see other sketches below)

I teach a sketching for water colour / painting class and after discussing the composition of sketch no. three with my students

I found that many of their suggestions could be easly incorporated by making minor changes to sketch no. three. See if you can identify the changes.

The third sketch in a series that will eventually result in an oil painting. After reluctantly giving up smelly oil painting years ago I have recently discovered water based oil paints. Now this is going to be fun at last.

My objective: reduce the elements to strong slightly distorted geometric forms and overlay graphic symbols that replace much of the natural detail in order to emotionalize the overall composition. Angular twisting of the huts and wharf in conjunction with the environmental starkness join in forming a poetic expression of the life force struggle as faced by fisherman the world over.

Watts Creek 1

Aug. 2003
7in x 9in
pencil on paper

Most every day during the summer I ride my mountain bike (bicycle) along the Watts Creek Trails. Numerous times over a six week period I stopped to look and absorb the ambience of this scene.

Although I carry a sketch pad with me I make very few sketches for fear that dependence upon sketches will destroy my mental impressions.
My objective is to express my feelings for the life forms. This could not be accomplished by foccusing on their visual appearance. To this end I removed the millions of small shapes that inundated my eyes thus simplfying the trees into simple life form expressons. The world we look out at merges with the world inside ourselves to become a unified life expression.
